Job Summary

The Registered Nurse provides clinical and administrative support to the Behavioral Health program. The RN performs therapeutic measures prescribed and delegated by the physician, participates in patient education and rehabilitation, and provides interpretation of treatment to patients and families. The RN coordinates unit activities and assures accountability of all assigned tasks.

Supervises: No supervisory duties

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate clinical knowledge of psychiatric nursing and provide high-quality patient care.
  • Maintain therapeutic relationships with patients, families, physicians, and staff.
  • Set appropriate limits while recognizing and managing behavior issues in a caring, consistent manner.
  • Apply knowledge of growth and development, psychopathology, and psychosocial systems.
  • Utilize psycho-dynamics and therapeutic processes to resolve patient care issues and communicate care effectively.
  • Respond appropriately to family dynamics.
  • Follow hospital policies and nursing standards with independent functioning.
  • Document all clinical information accurately and timely in the medical record.
  • Utilize the nursing process: assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, and evaluation.
  • Complete nursing assessments within required timeframes.
  • Participate in treatment planning meetings and conferences.
  • Assist with discharge planning and referrals.
  • Communicate treatment plans to the interdisciplinary team.
  • Maintain a therapeutic milieu and optimal patient care environment.
  • Review, transcribe, and implement physician orders accurately.
  • Administer medications and treatments correctly and document in MAR and progress notes.
  • Follow restraint/seclusion policies and maintain required privileges.
  • Recognize and respond to medical conditions appropriately and document findings.
  • Conduct patient groups and document participation.
  • Demonstrate leadership behaviors and organizational skills.
  • Maintain appropriate staffing levels in the absence of the Nurse Manager when directed.
  • Supervise nursing staff when assigned by the Nurse Manager.
  • Perform admissions, discharges, and transfers professionally.
  • Maintain professionalism and emotional stability in high-stress situations.
  • Serve as a role model to peers and support team development.
  • Maintain updated knowledge in psychiatric nursing through continuing education.
  • Attend unit meetings and support communication across the team.
  • Complete all competency requirements on time.
  • Support referral development and community education events as assigned.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned by the Nurse Manager.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Current BCLS certification
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • General knowledge of psychiatric nursing practice
Education
  • Graduate of a Registered Nursing program
Experience
  • Psychiatric nursing experience preferred
Certifications & Licensure
  • Current Iowa RN license or compact license valid in Iowa
  • Iowa Mandatory Reporter Child & Dependent Adult Abuse Certificates
  • BLS
