Job Description

Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio is seeking mission-minded Associates to join us as full time (37.5 per week) Copywriter. Applicant must reside in the state of Ohio.

Position Summary

Under the leadership of the Director of Communications and Marketing, the Copywriter is responsible for translating the organization’s strategic communication needs into compelling, mission driven messaging for staff, patients, clients, donors, corporate supporters, activists, organizers, and community leaders. This role collaborates directly with organizational leadership in the preparation and execution of strategic communications related to labor matters, including labor negotiations and associate grievances.

Duties And Responsibilities

Strategic Communications

  • In collaboration with the Director of Communications and Marketing, develop and execute strategic communications that support departmental goals across diverse audiences.
  • Serve as a thought partner to internal departments by providing copy and messaging guidance in support of development, advocacy, and human resources communications.
  • Liaise with Planned Parenthood Federation of America on key messaging, communications strategies, and current talking points, incorporating guidance as appropriate.
  • Maintain a confidential relationship with management regarding labor-management relations, ensuring sensitive information is handled discreetly and aligns with organizational policy.
  • Collaborate with other Planned Parenthood affiliates to learn and share effective communications strategies.

Content Development and Brand Stewardship

  • Create clear, timely, and persuasive messaging related to reproductive health care and sexual health education.
  • Develop content for key materials including annual reports, press releases, media alerts, op-eds, talking points, event communications, speeches, brochures, donor communications, internal communications, one pagers, and other collateral.
  • Collaborate closely with the Marketing and Communications team to produce strategic, results driven advertising and social media messaging that attracts and retains audiences.
  • Serve as an in house expert on brand tone, voice, and style.
  • Must maintain confidentiality regarding all labor relations information, including compensation and negotiation strategies.

Editing, Review, and Rapid Response

  • Revise, edit, and proofread content as directed by internal stakeholders, including the Office of the President.
  • Draft, proofread, and distribute internal confidential management memoranda regarding labor relations, including the presentation of management positions regarding collective bargaining and associate grievances.
  • Provide copy editing support across the communications team with a strong attention to detail.
  • Produce timely and accurate communications during rapid response or crisis situations
  • Manage tight deadlines and respond to feedback in a timely, constructive manner.
  • Stay current on marketing and communications trends and propose innovative, agile messaging approaches.

Qualifications and Skills

Required Qualifications

  • Exceptional writing and storytelling skills with the ability to clearly communicate complex and sensitive topics.
  • Demonstrated passion for and commitment to reproductive health and Planned Parenthood’s mission.
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills.
  • Ability to work independently under tight deadlines while exercising sound judgment.
  • Strong collaboration, organizational, and communication skills, including the ability to give and receive feedback constructively.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience writing for advocacy, nonprofit, or mission driven organizations.
  • Experience supporting crisis or rapid response communications.
  • Bilingual in Spanish

Education And Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, English, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Relevant professional writing or communications experience.

Work Schedule and Availability

This role requires availability during core business hours of 8a.m. through 5p.m. Eastern Time and requires occasional work during evenings and weekends based on operational needs, project timelines, or system implementations.

Travel Requirements

Occasional travel may be required for meetings, training, community engagement activities, or project-related activities. The ability to travel within the service area is required.

Working Conditions And Physical Requirements

Work is primarily performed in a remote, home-office based environment and requires prolonged periods of sitting or standing, computer use, screen time, and attendance at in-person and/or virtual meetings, trainings, and events. The role requires regular and timely attendance at virtual and in-person meetings, trainings, and/or events, reliable internet access, maintenance of a private and secure workspace, and compliance with confidentiality and data-security requirements. Work involves frequent collaboration with colleagues through scheduled and unscheduled virtual meetings and communication tools. Occasional travel to organizational worksites and sites operated by third-parties will be required for meetings, training, or operational needs.
