JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE: 6-8 Assistant Principal/Dean of Students

SUPERVISOR: Building Principal

QUALIFICATIONS: Must possess a valid South Dakota State Certificate to practice as an assistant principal. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable. Must have experience in curriculum and program development, early childhood (for elementary), community public relations, tribal program awareness, and education.

SUPERVISES: Assists with teaching staff, professional and paraprofessional staff members, and other resource and service personnel while functioning in the assigned school as directed by the building principal.

JOB GOALS:

The Assistant Principal/Dean of Students shall:

  1. Assist the Principal in administering the daily operation of the school.

  2. Serve as a member of the school leadership and administrative team.

  3. Assume responsibility for the operation of the school in the absence of the Principal.

  4. Coordinate and evaluate student support and pupil personnel services.

  5. Assist in maintaining a safe, orderly, and positive school environment.

  6. Oversee student attendance, conduct, health, and discipline.

  7. Implement fair, consistent, and restorative student discipline practices while ensuring due process.

  8. Counsel students experiencing academic, behavioral, emotional, mental health, social, or physical challenges.

  9. Meet with students individually or in groups to provide guidance and support.

  10. Consult with parents, teachers, counselors, and community agencies regarding student concerns.

  11. Develop intervention plans to improve student behavior, attendance, and academic success.

  12. Recommend appropriate interventions including tutoring, counseling, schedule changes, referrals, and alternative education placement when necessary.

  13. Arrange conferences between parents, teachers, and school personnel to address student needs.

  14. Maintain accurate records of student attendance, discipline, and progress.

  15. Assist with suspension, expulsion, and disciplinary procedures in accordance with Board policy and student rights.

  16. Coordinate initiatives that promote school attendance and reduce chronic absenteeism.

  17. Assist in developing, implementing, supervising, and evaluating curriculum and instructional programs.

  18. Support teachers in implementing adopted curriculum standards and instructional best practices.

  19. Participate in curriculum review, instructional planning, and school improvement initiatives.

  20. Assist in developing methods to evaluate student achievement and academic progress.

  21. Support the implementation and supervision of special education, intervention, and alternative education programs.

  22. Assist in developing the master schedule, teacher assignments, and classroom schedules.

  23. Supervise and support instructional staff in curriculum implementation and student learning.

  24. Assist in evaluating teachers, paraprofessionals, and support staff.

  25. Conduct classroom observations and provide instructional feedback to staff.

  26. Assist in recruiting, interviewing, selecting, assigning, mentoring, and retaining qualified staff.

  27. Coordinate and facilitate staff meetings, professional development, and in-service training.

  28. Promote collaboration, innovation, and professional growth among faculty and staff.

  29. Cooperate with colleges, universities, and educational partners regarding teacher preparation and professional learning.

  30. Collaborate with Sinte Gleska University in support of teacher and paraprofessional development.

  31. Assist in planning and conducting workshops and training for teachers, paraprofessionals, parents, and community members.

  32. Foster positive working relationships among students, staff, families, and community partners.

  33. Promote effective communication between the school and the community.

  34. Assist in developing and implementing parent engagement activities and educational workshops.

  35. Interpret school programs and initiatives to parents, community organizations, and stakeholders.

  36. Assist with public relations, school communications, and official correspondence.

  37. Participate in leadership meetings, district meetings, and professional organizations.

  38. Remain current with educational research, leadership practices, school law, and instructional strategies.

  39. Assist in identifying educational needs of the school community and developing plans to address those needs.

  40. Assist in implementing Board policies, administrative regulations, and school improvement initiatives.

  41. Coordinate and supervise extracurricular activities, student organizations, athletics, and school-sponsored events.

  42. Attend school functions, ceremonies, and activities to support student engagement.

  43. Assist in maintaining school safety, emergency preparedness, crisis response, and security procedures.

  44. Assist in maintaining accountability for school facilities, equipment, instructional materials, and other resources.

  45. Assist in budget planning, monitoring expenditures, maintaining records, and preparing required reports.

  46. Research and assist in securing grants and external funding opportunities to support educational programs and student services.

  47. Coordinate programs and services designed to meet the needs of at-risk students, including academic intervention, life skills, behavioral supports, and substance abuse prevention.

  48. Assist in administering and supervising alternative education programs and monitoring student progress.

  49. Collect, analyze, and report program data as required by district, tribal, state, and federal agencies.

  50. Support the implementation of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), restorative practices, and other student success initiatives.

  51. Provide leadership during school emergencies, crises, and critical incidents.

  52. Maintain confidentiality of student, personnel, and school records in accordance with applicable laws and policies.

  53. Demonstrate ethical leadership, professionalism, cultural responsiveness, and respect in all interactions.

  54. Adhere to all policies, procedures, and regulations of Sicangu Oyate Ho, Inc., the Board of Education, and all applicable tribal, state, and federal laws.

  55. Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal or Superintendent in support of the school's mission and educational goals.
