Overview of the School Counseling Program:
The Edison High School Counseling Program is comprehensive in nature, striving to provide education for ALL students involving academic and social-emotional skills, as well as college and post-secondary readiness. The Edison High School Counseling Program is proactive and preventative - helping students develop critical skills to achieve academic, social, and behavioral success. Some of the ways counselors implement education around these topics is through classroom lessons, individual and small group counseling, response services, referral and program management.
Classroom Lessons:
Often, the school counselor provides education to students in the classroom setting. This provides consistent learning and skill development. It allows counselors to observe and evaluate classroom and student needs.
Lessons often cover the following topics:Response Services/Consultation:
School counselors consult with teachers, administrators, support staff, parents/guardians, community agencies, and medical professionals regarding strategies to help students and families. Counselors serve as advocates for students in all consultation situations. Often there is a need for a Release of Information (ROI) when consulting with someone outside of the immediate Edison community.
Individual and Small Group Counseling:Edison High School Counselors provide counseling for students navigating emotional, relational, personal, and developmental challenges.
Crisis Counseling: The Edison High School Counselor provides prevention, intervention, and follow-up.
Referral: Edison High School Counselors use referral sources to deal with suicidal ideation, violence, abuse, mental health issues, and family difficulties.
Peer Facilitation: Edison High School Counselors are involved in updating and sharing their professional knowledge and skills through in-service training and staff meetings.
Program Management:Edison High School Counselors collect and analyze data to evaluate and improve the School Counseling Program. This includes planning and management tasks needed to support activities conducted by the program, such as:
Confidentiality:
Edison HIgh School Counselors develop and practice confidentiality with students. This means that the information gathered through meetings with students and parents/guardians will be shared on a “need-to-know” basis only. We diligently strive to maintain the privacy of students and their families. When information needs to be shared, we will assess the best way to share the information with the appropriate parties to best help students and their families.
