Job Description and Duties

This position is limited term for up to 12 months. It may be extended up to an additional 12 months or become permanent.


This position is for a 10 month school year with eligibility for an additional 2 months to be paid by State Special School Benefits through Unemployment Insurance. 

Under direction and supervision of the Director of Dietetics, the Supervising Cook I is responsible for planning, organizing and supervising the preparation, cooking, and serving of meals to students at the California School for the Deaf, Riverside (CSDR). Responsible for supervising and assigning duties to Cook Specialists and Food Service Technicians (FSTs). Supervises the serving lines to assure correct portions, quality control and proper serving methods are followed to meet the rules and guidelines of the National School Meal Program. Supervises the maintenance of culinary equipment, cleaning of kitchen and cafeteria. Ensure the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) standards are followed and documented (temperature, food preparation, and storage). Keeps production records and prepares reports. Participates in new employee hiring process, trains, evaluates employee work performance and takes or recommends appropriate action. Acts for the Director of Dietetics in his/her absence.

Working Conditions

Subject to fingerprinting and criminal record clearance by the Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation and Tuberculosis clearance. This position is designated as safety sensitive and is subject to reasonable suspicion drug and alcohol testing.

Examination

Individuals must have taken and passed an examination to obtain list eligibility for the classification in order to apply.  List eligibility may be obtained by meeting the minimum qualifications as outlined in the examination bulletin, and obtaining a passing score on the Qualifications Assessment Questionnaire.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

  • Possession of a current ServSafe certificate
  • 5 yrs experience in quantity cooking for a commercial foodservice establishment serving meals for at least 500 people
  • 4 yrs experience in a supervisory capacity over cooks & foodservice workers in a large foodservice facility
  • Ability to effectively communicate and exchange information, read, write, and speak English at a level required for successful job performance, and willingness to learn American Sign Language

Additional Salary Information

Effective July 1, 2025, the California Department of Human Resources (CalHR) implemented the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025). PLP 2025 directs that each employee shall receive a 3 percent reduction in pay in exchange for 5 hours of PLP 2025 leave credits, monthly. The salary range(s) included in the job advertisement do not reflect the 3 percent reduction in pay.
