The Marine Estimator is responsible for the preparation, analysis, and completion of shipyard bids and proposals for new construction, and conversion projects. The position develops detailed cost estimates, labor forecasts, material take-offs, subcontractor pricing, and production plans to support competitive and profitable project execution. The Marine Estimator works closely with engineering, production, purchasing, and executive management to evaluate opportunities and secure new business for the shipyard.
Key Responsibilities • I dentify and pursue new project opportunities for the shipyard.
• Review customer specifications, drawings, contracts, and technical requirements.
• Conduct proposal meetings with project management, production personnel, and management.
• Develop detailed labor, material, equipment, and subcontractor cost estimates.
• Prepare bid summaries, proposals, and customer submittals.
• Create detailed work breakdown structures and itemized scopes of work.
• Solicit, analyze, and evaluate vendor and subcontractor quotations.
• Compare subcontractor pricing to in-house production costs and recommend sourcing strategies.
• Develop productivity assumptions, labor budgets, and schedule estimates.
• Establish long-lead material requirements and procurement strategies.
• Prepare pricing for contract modifications and change orders.
• Work with production management to develop execution plans and project schedules.
• Conduct estimate turnover meetings with project management and production personnel following contract award.
• Utilize historical cost and performance data to improve estimating accuracy.
• Participate in bid/no-bid evaluations and risk assessments.
• Communicate financial, bonding, insurance, and regulatory requirements to management.
Required Qualifications • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, Business, or a related field preferred.
• Minimum ten (10) years of commercial marine, shipbuilding, ship repair, or related estimating experience.
• Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, specifications, and contracts.
• Strong understanding of shipyard production processes and vessel construction methods.
• Knowledge of U.S. Coast Guard, ABS, and other marine regulatory requirements.
• Experience with marine vessel systems, structural fabrication, and outfitting.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to manage multiple bids and priorities simultaneously.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and Project.
• AutoCAD experience preferred.
